The story

Velachery — TVK takes Chennai's IT-corridor seat by 33,305 votes

TVK's R. Kumar won Velachery by 33,305 votes over AIADMK's M. K. Ashok — overturning a seat that has see-sawed every cycle. INC's J. M. H. Aassan Maulaana scraped through in 2021 by just 4,352 votes (DMK alliance), DMK's Vagai Chandrasekhar took it in 2016 by 8,872, and Ashok himself had won it for AIADMK in 2011 by a thumping 31,720. Velachery covers Chennai's south-east IT corridor — Phoenix MarketCity, the Velachery lake basin, Tidel Park's southern edge and the Pallikaranai marsh fringe.

About Velachery

Velachery — AC 26 — is the south Chennai constituency that has carried the brunt of the city's IT-corridor expansion since the 2000s. The seat takes in Velachery proper, parts of Adambakkam, the Tambaram-bound rail corridor, Tidel Park's outer edge and the Pallikaranai marsh — one of the last surviving wetlands inside the metropolitan limits. Phoenix MarketCity, the Vijaya Nagar bus terminus, the Velachery lake bund and the engineering colleges along the Tambaram-Velachery road give the seat its post-2000 character; the older village core around the Dhandeeswaram temple still survives in pockets.

Velachery — IT corridor and Pallikaranai

Phoenix mall, Pallikaranai marsh and Tidel Park's southern edge

Velachery is the new south Chennai — Phoenix MarketCity for shopping, Tidel Park for the IT crowd, and the Pallikaranai marsh for one of the city's last surviving wetlands and its waterbirds. The Velachery lake bund at sunset and the old Dhandeeswarar temple on Velachery main road show the village core that pre-dated the IT boom.
