By 22 May 2026 CM C. Joseph Vijay's TVK government had built out a 35-member cabinet — the Constitutional ceiling — with 21 TVK + 2 Congress ministers sworn in on 21 May and VCK + IUML ministers on 22 May. The floor test on 13 May was carried 144–22 after 24 AIADMK rebels crossed against EPS's whip. Vijay was sworn in on 10 May as the first leader outside DMK and AIADMK to lead Tamil Nadu since 1967. 27 May brought full AIADMK reconciliation, but six AIADMK MLAs had resigned by 29 June. With Tiruchirappalli East, which Vijay gave up, seven seats are vacant; by-elections have been called in two, Madurantakam and Dharapuram, on 6 October 2026.

Postal ballots — cast by polling-duty officers, on-duty government staff and absentee voters — are counted before the EVMs. 118 of 234 seats had a postal-ballot leader different from the overall winner — a pattern that says polling-duty voters are leaning differently from the broader electorate.
