About Valparai
Valparai is a Scheduled Caste-reserved hill constituency in Coimbatore district, perched on the Anaimalai range at over 3,500 feet. The economy runs on tea, coffee and cardamom estates, and a sizeable Tamil-origin repatriate population from Sri Lanka's hill plantations forms part of the electorate. The constituency has alternated between CPI, AIADMK and DMK over recent decades, with CPI's M. Arumugham winning in 2011 and AIADMK retaining the seat in 2016 and 2021. Polled votes are typically the lowest in the district given the small electorate spread across plantations. The seat sits within the Pollachi Lok Sabha constituency.
Valparai travel
Valparai is reached by the famous 40-hairpin ghat road from Aliyar, climbing past the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve where lion-tailed macaques and Nilgiri tahr cross the road. The town is ringed by tea estates, the Sholayar reservoir and treks to the Grass Hills above 7,000 feet.
