Kavundampalayam — TVK's Kanimozhi Santhosh breaks AIADMK's three-term hold by 42,140
Kanimozhi Santhosh of TVK has captured Kavundampalayam, Tamil Nadu's second-largest electorate, by 42,140 votes over AIADMK's sitting MLA P.R.G. Arunkumar. The seat had been an AIADMK fortress: V.C. About Kavundampalayam
Kavundampalayam — AC 117 — covers the north-western suburbs of Coimbatore city, a Kongu Vellala Gounder heartland that has urbanised fast as the city has spilled past Mettupalayam Road. The seat takes in Saravanampatti's IT parks, Vadavalli's residential belt and the foothill villages running up toward Anaikatti and the Nilgiri escarpment. Marudhamalai Murugan temple, perched on a 12-km-out hillock and a major Kongu pilgrim draw, falls just inside the constituency. Koniamman, the city's tutelary goddess, sits a short drive south in the old town. Textile-knitwear ancillaries and pump-set foundries are the dominant small-industry base alongside agriculture on the Anaikatti side.
Kavundampalayam & the Nilgiri foothills
Kavundampalayam shades from Coimbatore's IT-park suburbs into Gounder farm country at the Nilgiri foot. Climb the 837 steps (or drive up) to Marudhamalai Murugan temple for the city skyline at dusk, push 25 km out to Anaikatti's tribal-belt forests and the Siruvani backwater, and finish with filter coffee and Kongu-style kola urundai at a Vadavalli mess.
