The 2006 result — AIADMK by 14 votes over CPI(M) — remains one of the narrowest assembly verdicts in Tamil Nadu's electoral record. CPM contested with the DMK alliance in 2006 and 1996; in 2001 CPM was with AIADMK.

Where the city's industrial frontier meets a migratory-bird wetland

Singanallur Lake on the Noyyal pulls migratory birds in winter and is one of the largest waterbodies inside Coimbatore. Around it sit Peelamedu's textile college campuses, the airport approach road, and TIDEL Park. The Sungam boat house and Ondipudur market round out a half-day in the eastern half of the city.
