The story

Coimbatore South — Senthil Balaji wins DMK's Kongu cliffhanger by 2,271 votes

V. Senthil Balaji of DMK has narrowly won Coimbatore South by 2,271 votes against TVK's V. Senthilkumar, completing a politically charged comeback for the former minister who had spent time in custody during the cash-for-jobs probe. The constituency has a habit of nail-biters: Vanathi Srinivasan of BJP took the seat in 2021 by just 1,728 votes over Kamal Haasan (MNM), and Amman K. Arjunan of AIADMK won in 2016 by 17,419 votes over INC's Mayura Jayakumar.

About Coimbatore South

Coimbatore (South) — AC 120 — is the urban core of Tamil Nadu's manufacturing capital, the Kongu Nadu power-loom and pump-set city built on the cool, dry plain between the Western Ghats and the Noyyal. The seat covers R.S. Puram's shopping streets, Race Course's tree-lined bungalows and the Perur belt where the 1,300-year-old Patteeswarar temple sits on the Noyyal bank. Velliangiri's seven hills — backdrop to the Isha Foundation's Adiyogi statue — rise 30 km west, and Siruvani's drinking-water dam and falls lie just beyond. The seat has been a BJP-friendly urban pocket since 2021, distinct from Coimbatore's textile-belt seats.

Perur Patteeswarar, Race Course bungalows and the Adiyogi at Velliangiri

Coimbatore South is the city at its dressed-up best — R.S. Puram for Kongu silk and Annapoorna tiffin, Race Course for a morning walk under rain trees. Drive west to Perur Patteeswarar, the 7th-century Chola shrine on the Noyyal, then on to Isha's 112-foot Adiyogi at the foot of Velliangiri. Stretch the trip with the Siruvani waterfalls and the dam reservoir behind it.
