About Udumalaipettai
Udumalaipettai — AC 125 — sits in the Anaimalai foothills in southern Tiruppur district, the last Tamil town before the ghat road climbs to Munnar. The seat is built on cotton, coconut and turmeric, with the Aliyar dam (1959, on a Cauvery tributary) feeding the Parambikulam-Aliyar Project canals that irrigate the plain. Topslip and the Anamalai Tiger Reserve — TN's flagship western-ghats forest, home to lion-tailed macaque and the Grass Hills shola — open just past the dam. Old Udumalpet town has the Avinashilingeswarar temple and a colonial-era handloom market. The Pollachi-Munnar highway and wind-farm cluster on the Palghat gap define its modern economy.
Udumalpet & the Anamalai gateway
Udumalpet is the launch pad for the Anamalais — drive 25 km to Aliyar dam for a boat ride and the Monkey Falls turn-off, then on to Topslip inside the Anamalai Tiger Reserve for a forest-department safari through teak and bamboo. Push another two hours up the ghat for Munnar's tea slopes, or detour to the Anjaneyar temple on the Pollachi road for filter coffee and country food.
