About Kangayam
Kangayam is the cattle country of the Kongu belt. The Kangayam bull, a hardy white draught breed registered under the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, is bred across the constituency and feeds the jallikattu circuit at Avaniyapuram and Palamedu. The seat takes in Kangayam town, Vellakovil and Mulanur, with Tiruppur knitwear units pushing east into the rural villages. Politically it has flipped between DMK and AIADMK at every cycle since 2006: NSN Nataraj of AIADMK won by 41,765 in 2011, INC's Sekar took 2006, and AIADMK's Selvi held it in 2001.
Things to do in Kangayam
The Kangayam bull research station and a clutch of breeders' farms around the town welcome visitors who want to see the registered native draught breed up close, especially in the months before Pongal when bulls are trained for jallikattu. The Senganmal pasture lands south of town are a rare surviving common-grazing ecosystem in Tamil Nadu.
