About Dharapuram
Dharapuram is an SC-reserved constituency in eastern Tiruppur district, sitting on the Amaravathi river plain. The town is one of Tamil Nadu's oldest, with references in Sangam-era literature, and its modern economy runs on cotton ginning, tanneries and small dyeing units that feed the Tiruppur knitwear cluster 50 km west. The constituency takes in Kundadam, Moolanur and a long stretch of dry farming villages towards Karur. It was a PMK stronghold in 2001, swung to AIADMK in 2011, INC in 2016 and DMK in 2021, making it one of the most volatile reserved seats in the western belt.
Things to do in Dharapuram
Dharapuram is mentioned in Sangam-era Tamil texts as Vanji and the Kalingarayan canal that irrigates these fields was cut in the 13th century, making it among India's oldest working canals. The Sri Kailasanathar temple inside the town has a 1,000-year-old core. A short drive south takes you to the Amaravathi reservoir near Udumalpet, a quiet birding spot in winter.
