About Thiruvaiyaru
Thiruvaiyaru is the Cauvery-bank town where Saint Thyagaraja composed his kritis and where the annual Thyagaraja Aradhana brings Carnatic musicians from across the world every January. The constituency mixes the cultural town with the rural Thanjavur delta around it - paddy, sugarcane and the Grand Anicut canal network. Durai Chandrasekaran first won the seat for DMK by just 366 votes in 2006, lost it in 2011 to AIADMK's M. Rethinasami, and has held it since 2016.
Around Thiruvaiyaru
The Thyagaraja samadhi on the Cauvery bank is small and unfussy - go in the cool of the morning. Thanjavur's Brihadeeswara temple is 13 km away and best done as a sunrise visit, with breakfast at one of the old Big Street tiffin rooms on the way back.
