Peravurani — Govi Elango brings AIADMK back to the Pattukottai coast by 3,162 votes

AIADMK veteran Govi.Elango won Peravurani by 3,162 votes over sitting DMK MLA N. Ashokkumar — flipping the Coromandel-coast seat after a single DMK cycle. The seat is one of TN's most volatile: DMDK's Arun Pandian carried it in 2011 by 7,194 votes (on the AIADMK alliance), AIADMK's M. Govindarasu held it by a 995-vote whisker in 2016, and DMK's Ashokkumar took it by 23,503 in 2021. Govi Elango — a long-standing AIADMK leader — restores the seat to the AIADMK column in a tight contest. Peravurani sits on the Pattukottai-Coromandel cyclone belt, the same coastal paddy stretch that bore the brunt of Cyclone Gaja in 2018.

Peravurani is one of TN's most cycle-flipping seats — every recent contest has gone to a different alliance or a different party. The 2011 race featured two dual pills: actor Arun Pandian on DMDK (AIADMK alliance) and INC's K. Mahendran (DMK alliance). Govi Elango's 3,162-vote 2026 win is the second-tightest result the seat has produced — only the 995-vote 2016 squeaker was closer.

About Peravurani

Peravurani — AC 177 — covers the south-eastern coastal belt of Thanjavur district, a Pattukottai-region paddy and coconut country fronting the Bay of Bengal. The constituency sits on the Coromandel cyclone belt — Cyclone Gaja in November 2018 caused widespread devastation here, flattening coconut groves and paddy fields. The seat has flipped every cycle in the post-delimitation era — DMDK in 2011 (the actor Arun Pandian's debut), AIADMK in 2016 (by 995 votes), DMK in 2021, and AIADMK again in 2026 by Govi Elango.

Peravurani & the Pattukottai Coast

Coromandel paddy, Manora fort, and the Karaiyur fishing villages

Peravurani is where the Thanjavur delta's green plain hits the Bay of Bengal — a Pattukottai-region coast lined with fishing villages, paddy fields, and the eight-storied 1814 Manora fort the Maratha ruler Serfoji II raised to mark the British-French peace. The same coast supplies the Karaiyur and Sethubavachatram fishing harbours, and the cyclone-belt geography that made Gaja's 2018 landfall so devastating. Pair a Manora climb with the Vedaranyam salt-pan drive south for the full delta-coast arc.
