The story

Orathanadu — R. Vaithilingam returns on DMK ticket, takes the Pattukottai paddy belt by 35,028 votes

Veteran R. Vaithilingam — who held Orathanadu for the AIADMK in 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2021 — won the seat in 2026 by 35,028 votes over TVK's Dr K. Arvind, this time on the DMK ticket. The four-time AIADMK MLA's switch is one of the headline crossovers of the cycle. The Pattukottai-Manargudi paddy belt has otherwise been a steady AIADMK pocket — Vaithilingam's only loss here was to DMK's M. Ramachandran in 2016 by 3,645 votes. Orathanadu also carries political weight as the rural backyard of the Sasikala family — long-time aide of J. Jayalalithaa — whose Mannargudi roots lie a short drive away.

R. Vaithilingam's career has tracked Orathanadu through five cycles — four wins on AIADMK (2001, 2006, 2011, 2021), a 3,645-vote loss to DMK's Ramachandran in 2016, and a return to the seat in 2026 on a DMK ticket. The Sasikala-family Mannargudi connection runs through this paddy belt; both Dravidian-major parties have always taken the contest seriously here.

About Orathanadu

Orathanadu — AC 175 — covers the Pattukottai-Manargudi paddy belt of southern Thanjavur district, prime Cauvery delta rice country with a strong Mukkulathor (Thevar) presence. The constituency is also part of the rural heartland that produced V. K. Sasikala, J. Jayalalithaa's long-time confidante — Mannargudi sits a short drive across the district line. R. Vaithilingam has been the seat's defining politician for two decades, winning here in 2001, 2006, 2011, 2021 (all on AIADMK) and now 2026 on a DMK ticket.

Orathanadu & the Pattukottai Paddy Belt

Mannargudi temple, Pattukottai's rice country, Vedaranyam's salt coast

Orathanadu sits where the Cauvery delta's last green stretch slopes toward the Bay of Bengal — Pattukottai's paddy-and-coconut country lifting east into the Vedaranyam salt pans Rajaji marched on in 1930. Mannargudi's Rajagopalaswamy temple — a 17th-century Thanjavur Nayak masterwork with one of TN's largest temple tanks — anchors the southern delta a short drive away, and the Point Calimere wildlife sanctuary at Kodiyakkarai closes the district's coastal arc with flamingos through the November-March migratory season.
