Erode West was newly formed in 2008 by splitting the integrated Erode constituency; pre-2011 records do not exist.
About Erode (West)
Erode West covers the western half of the Cauvery-bank textile capital, including Periyar Nagar, Veerappanchatram and the turmeric-trading lanes around the Erode railway station. The constituency was carved out of the integrated Erode seat during the 2008 delimitation and runs on the powerloom-and-dye-house economy that supplies Tiruppur and the export markets. K.V. Ramalingam of AIADMK held it in 2011 and 2016; DMK's S. Muthusamy flipped it in 2021 and served as a state minister. Erode is also the political base of the Kongu Vellalar caucus, and any seat shift here ripples across the western belt.
Things to do in Erode
Erode is the country's biggest turmeric trading hub and the wholesale yard near the railway station opens around 6 am with dealers grading sticks. Periyar EVR was born here, and the Periyar memorial on EVR Road is a half-hour stop. From the western end of the constituency it is a 15-km drive to the Bhavani-Cauvery confluence at Kooduthurai.
