About Ponneri
Ponneri (AC 2, SC reserved) sits on the northern Coromandel coast in Tiruvallur district, where the Buckingham Canal, Ennore Port and Pulicat Lake — Tamil Nadu's second-largest brackish lagoon and a winter home for greater flamingos — define the geography. The constituency mixes salt pans, fishing hamlets and the Manali-Ennore industrial belt, and was floated in TN's planning files as a future Sipcot mega-node. The Sadras Dutch Fort, built around 1648 on the Coromandel coast and now an ASI-protected ruin, lies down the ECR near the Madras Atomic Power Station at Kalpakkam.
Ponneri & the Pulicat Coast
Ponneri opens onto Pulicat Lake, where greater flamingos arrive between November and March across the salt pans and fishing villages. Drive the ECR south to the 1648 Dutch fort at Sadras and the Kalpakkam atomic township, or north to Ennore Port and the Buckingham Canal's quiet backwaters. End at a Pulicat shack for fresh nandu masala and karuvadu kulambu.
