About Panruti
Panruti is the jackfruit capital of Tamil Nadu, with the May-June fruit auctions at the Panruti market drawing buyers from as far as Mumbai. The seat sits in the southern half of Cuddalore district, covers Panruti taluk and parts of Kurinjipadi, and runs along the Gadilam river. Around 208,000 voters polled this cycle. The seat has had four different winners in four cycles: PMK's T. Velmurugan in 2006, DMDK's P. Sivakozhundu in 2011, AIADMK's Sathya Panneerselvam in 2016, and Velmurugan again on a TVK ticket in 2021. AIADMK has now retaken it.
Jackfruit auctions and Pichavaram
The Panruti jackfruit market is a working spectacle from late April through June. From here, the Pichavaram mangrove backwaters at Killai are an hour south on the East Coast Road, and the Devanampattinam beach near Cuddalore town offers a quieter sunset than Marina.
