Madurai East 2026: TVK's Karthikeyan ousts DMK with 16,547-vote swing
TVK's S. Karthikeyan wrenched Madurai East from the DMK with 118,777 votes, pushing two-term sitting MLA P. Moorthy's successor P. Moorthy to 102,230. The 16,547-vote margin is a stark reversal of the 49,604-vote DMK landslide of 2021, and turns one of the city's most reliable cadre seats into a TVK showpiece.

About Madurai East
Madurai East (AC 189) covers the eastern edge of the temple city, taking in Othakkadai, Vilangudi, the Madurai Kamaraj University belt and the dense urban wards along the Madurai-Melur road. It pairs salaried colonies and IT-services workers with older trade-and-transport neighbourhoods, and forms part of the Madurai Lok Sabha seat. Polling stations cluster around aided schools in Tallakulam, Anna Nagar and Goripalayam. Through 2016 and 2021 the seat behaved like a DMK citadel under P. Moorthy, with margins north of 30,000; the 2026 result tears that pattern apart.
When you are in Madurai East
Mornings start with filter coffee near Tallakulam and a darshan at the smaller Pandi Muneeswarar shrines before the Meenakshi Amman crowd builds up downtown. Drive east toward Othakkadai for jigarthanda at the original Famous Jigarthanda branch, then loop past Madurai Kamaraj University's leafy campus on the way out to Alagar Kovil for an evening climb.
