Vedaranyam has voted AIADMK in every cycle since 2011 - the only delta seat south of the Cauvery to do so without a break.

About Vedaranyam

Vedaranyam runs along the southern tip of the Cauvery delta, where the river finally meets the Bay of Bengal as a maze of mangroves and salt flats. The Vedaranyeswarar temple and Rajagopalan's 1930 salt satyagraha march give the town its history. Today the economy is salt pans, paddy on the inland delta and the fishing villages around Kodikkarai. Point Calimere wildlife sanctuary, with its flamingo flocks and feral horses, sits at the edge of the constituency. Manian first lost this seat to S. K. Vedarathinam of DMK in 2006 and has since flipped the equation thoroughly.

Drive out at dawn to Point Calimere - the flamingo flocks lift off the lagoon as the sun comes up, and the feral horses are on the grass strips by 7am. The Kodikkarai lighthouse and the salt-march memorial near the old Vedaranyam tehsil office round the day.
