About Nagapattinam
Nagapattinam is the old Coromandel port that Naval Tamil and Dutch records both describe, and the constituency wraps the port, the fishing harbour and the cluster of urban wards behind them. Fishing, the Neyveli-fed thermal plant nearby, and the customs and coastal-shipping economy set the working-class vote. The town carries memories of the 2004 tsunami in almost every coastal panchayat and the seawall, mass graves and rebuilt churches near Velankanni still come up at every campaign. Communal balance matters: Christian, Muslim and Hindu vote blocs all sit inside the urban core.
Around Nagapattinam
Velankanni's Our Lady of Health basilica is 12 km south and runs almost as a 24-hour pilgrim town - go in the early morning before the queues build. Stop at Nagore Dargah on the way back and end the day at the lighthouse beach near the old harbour.
