Nagercoil 2026: DMK's Austin flips BJP seat by 7,570 votes
Austin pulled Nagercoil back to the DMK with 69,880 votes, edging out TVK's Bervin Kings G on 62,310 in a 21-candidate field. The 7,570-vote margin ends the BJP's lone southern outpost - sitting MLA M.R. Gandhi finished third as TVK absorbed most of the anti-DMK vote that backed the lotus in 2021.

About Nagercoil
Nagercoil is the headquarters of Kanyakumari district and the southernmost city of mainland India, named after the Nagaraja temple at its centre. The constituency takes in the city core, the Christian-majority belts around the Cathedral of Our Lady of Ransom and the trading lanes of Vadasery. The economy runs on rubber traders, latex factories on the Tirunelveli road, and a steady flow of Gulf and Singapore remittances that built much of the new housing along the bypass. Wind farms on the Aralvaimozhi pass and the Marthandam tapioca trail anchor the rural fringe, but the city itself votes more like a Kerala border town - mixing Christian, Nadar and Muslim communities with one of the highest literacy rates in Tamil Nadu. The seat has flipped between AIADMK, DMK and BJP across the last four cycles.
Travel from Nagercoil
Kanyakumari point with the Vivekananda Rock and Thiruvalluvar statue is 19 km away and best done at sunrise. Loop back through Suchindram temple, then drive an hour west to Padmanabhapuram Palace, the largest wooden palace in India. The wind-farm pass at Aralvaimozhi makes a dramatic late-afternoon detour back into Tirunelveli district.
