About Tirupattur

Tirupattur (AC 50) is the headquarters of Tamil Nadu's youngest district, carved out of Vellore in 2019, and the gateway to the Yelagiri hills. The 14 hairpin bends up to Yelagiri — each named after a Tamil personality — open onto Punganur Lake and Swamimalai viewpoint at roughly 1,100 metres. Deep in the Javadi range nearby, the Vainu Bappu Observatory at Kavalur, run by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, houses India's largest optical telescope, the 2.3-metre Vainu Bappu. Tirupattur town itself is a long-standing leather and tannery centre on the Chennai-Bangalore line, with the Hazrat Yusufuddin Bukhari dargah drawing pilgrims across communities.

Tirupattur & the Yelagiri Climb

14 hairpin bends, India's largest optical telescope and a leather-town dargah

Tirupattur is the foot of the Yelagiri climb — 14 named hairpin bends up to Punganur Lake, Swamimalai viewpoint and the cool 1,100-metre plateau. Deeper in the Javadis, the Vainu Bappu Observatory at Kavalur opens its 2.3-metre telescope to visitors on Saturday nights. Back in town, the Bukhari dargah and the tannery quarter round off a slow day.
