About Ambasamudram
Ambasamudram sits on the south bank of the Tamirabarani in Tirunelveli district, an old paddy and banana belt that built itself around the river's spillway and the Papanasam reservoir feeders upstream. The town is a temple stop on the Madurai-Tirunelveli line, anchored by the Kasi Viswanathar shrine and the cluster of Brahmin agraharams that gave it the local nickname Madurantakam-of-the-south. The constituency stitches together the Ambasamudram and Cheranmahadevi taluks, mixing rice farmers, mill workers from the long-shuttered cotton units and a quietly prosperous remittance class with Singapore links. Politically it has stayed an AIADMK stronghold through every cycle since 2011.
Travel from Ambasamudram
Drive 14 km upstream to Papanasam dam and the falls below it, then push another 30 km into the Western Ghats for Agasthiyar Falls and the trek to Kalyana Theertham. Back in town the Kasi Viswanathar temple and the riverbank ghats at Sorimuthu Ayyanar are easy half-day stops before the Tirunelveli halwa shops on the way home.
