Dr Esakki Subaya wrestled Ambasamudram back for the AIADMK with 65,589 votes, fending off Congress challenger V.P. Durai who polled 55,344. About Ambasamudram

Ambasamudram sits on the south bank of the Tamirabarani in Tirunelveli district, an old paddy and banana belt that built itself around the river's spillway and the Papanasam reservoir feeders upstream. The town is a temple stop on the Madurai-Tirunelveli line, anchored by the Kasi Viswanathar shrine and the cluster of Brahmin agraharams that gave it the local nickname Madurantakam-of-the-south. The constituency stitches together the Ambasamudram and Cheranmahadevi taluks, mixing rice farmers, mill workers from the long-shuttered cotton units and a quietly prosperous remittance class with Singapore links. Politically it has stayed an AIADMK stronghold through every cycle since 2011.
