About Udhagamandalam
Udhagamandalam — AC 108 — is the Nilgiris-district seat covering Ooty itself, the 2,240-m hill station the British rebuilt as their summer capital from the 1820s. The constituency takes in Doddabetta (2,637 m, the highest peak in Tamil Nadu), the Botanical Gardens laid out in 1848, Ooty Lake, the Toda mund hamlets above the town, and the upper section of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway — a UNESCO World Heritage extension since 2005, with Asia's steepest rack track at 8.33% gradient. Tea, eucalyptus and a tourist economy define everything; the Coonoor estates lie 20 km south.
Ooty & the Nilgiri queen
Take the UNESCO Nilgiri Mountain Railway up from Mettupalayam for the slowest, steepest climb in Asia, then walk Ooty's 1848 Botanical Gardens and the lake. Drive 10 km up Doddabetta for the Tamil Nadu rooftop view, then push out to Pykara Falls and Avalanche Lake through Toda mund country. Coonoor's tea estates close the loop 20 km south.
