About Coonoor
Coonoor is the second-largest hill town in the Nilgiris, sitting at 1,850 metres on the slope below Ooty. The constituency runs from the Wellington cantonment through the tea estates of Lower Coonoor and down to Mettupalayam's hill base, taking in Burliar and Aravankadu. Tea plucking, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway workshop, the Defence Services Staff College at Wellington and Cordite Factory at Aravankadu are the main employers. The seat has alternated between DMK (2021, 2011, 2006, 1996), AIADMK (2016, 1991) and TMC(M) (2001) across the last six elections, never staying with one party for more than one cycle until 2021-2026.
Things to do in Coonoor
Sim's Park in upper Coonoor holds 1,000 plant species across 12 hectares and the annual fruit and vegetable show in May draws hill farmers from across the Nilgiris. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage line, halts at Coonoor and tickets on the Mettupalayam-Ooty heritage steam run are best booked weeks ahead. Tea factory tours at Highfield and Glendale estates explain orthodox processing.
