The story

Thoothukkudi — TVK's Srinath unseats Special Programme Minister Geetha Jeevan, by 37,731 votes

TVK's Srinath won Thoothukkudi by 37,731 votes over P. Geetha Jeevan — DMK's Special Programme Implementation Minister in the Stalin government and a two-time MLA from this Pearl City seat. Geetha Jeevan had held the seat by 50,310 votes in 2021 and 20,908 in 2016; her 2026 loss is one of the cycle's higher-profile ministerial defeats. Thoothukkudi is the headquarters of the district that bears its name — the 'Pearl City' of TN, a major port town on the Gulf of Mannar, and the district where the 2018 anti-Sterlite-copper-plant protests left 13 people dead in police firing — a wound that has shaped the constituency's politics ever since.

Geetha Jeevan and S. T. About Thoothukkudi

Thoothukkudi — AC 214 — is the headquarters constituency of Thoothukudi district, the 'Pearl City' that the Pandyas and later the Portuguese, Dutch and British made one of TN's foremost port towns. The Tuticorin port complex remains India's fourth-largest container port. The district carries the long shadow of the May 2018 anti-Sterlite-copper-plant protests, when 13 protestors were killed in police firing — a flashpoint that has shaped political alignments in the seat ever since. The constituency also encompasses the city's beaches, the V.O. Chidambaram Pillai Port Trust offices, and the Roche Park heart of the old colonial quarter.

Thoothukkudi & the Pearl City

Pandya port, Portuguese churches, and the Gulf of Mannar pearl beds

Thoothukkudi is the Pearl City — a port town the Pandyas, Portuguese, Dutch and British each shaped in turn, sitting on the Gulf of Mannar's pearl-oyster banks. The Roche Park colonial quarter and the 1582 Holy Trinity Cathedral mark the Portuguese era; the V.O. Chidambaram Pillai port keeps a 1906 swadeshi shipping legacy alive; and the Hare Island and Vanthivu offshore drives lead into the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park's coral and dugong waters. Macaroon biscuits and the Sunday parotta-and-jellyfish-curry stalls round out a coast that still trades on its sea.
