Thoothukkudi (AC 214) is the headquarters constituency of Thoothukudi district, the 'Pearl City' that the Pandyas and later the Portuguese, Dutch and British made one of TN's foremost port towns. The Tuticorin port complex remains India's fourth-largest container port.
The district carries the long shadow of the May 2018 anti-Sterlite-copper-plant protests, when 13 protestors were killed in police firing — a flashpoint that has shaped political alignments in the seat ever since. The constituency also encompasses the city's beaches, the V.O. Chidambaram Pillai Port Trust offices, and the Roche Park heart of the old colonial quarter.
