Mayiladuthurai sits on the north bank of the Kaveri in the new Mayiladuthurai district carved out in 2020. The town is built around the Mayuranathaswami temple and the river ghats that draw lakhs during Aadi Amavasya.
Paddy, sugarcane and the cluster of small rice mills along the Kollidam set the rhythm of the rural booths, while the town vote turns on traders, weavers and a sizeable college student population. The seat has bounced between INC, AIADMK and DMDK in the last four elections - never the same party twice in a row until this Congress win.
