About Alangudi
Alangudi takes its name from the Guru sthala temple on the Navagraha pilgrimage circuit, with devotees streaming in on Thursdays through the year. The constituency covers central Pudukkottai's mix of paddy, betelvine and the small jaggery economy around Keelanilai. Siva Meyyanathan, son of veteran DMK leader V. P. Singaravelu, has held the seat since 2016 - his father had won it earlier. Before 2016 the seat had alternated between AIADMK, CPI and INC.
Around Alangudi
Time the trip for a Thursday morning when the Guru sthala temple is at full flow - the devasthanam queue moves quickly enough. The other Navagraha shrines around Kumbakonam and Thiruvidaimarudur are an hour's drive each.
