About Jayankondam
Jayankondam is one of three assembly seats in Ariyalur district and lies in the heart of the Cholanadu lignite-and-paddy belt, north of Cuddalore. The town is named for the Chola emperor Rajendra Chola I's victory capital, Gangaikonda Cholapuram, which sits within the AC. Around 226,000 voters polled this cycle. PMK has been a perennial contender here: J. Guru @ Gurunathan won the seat in 2011 by 15,138 votes; AIADMK's Ramajeyalingam took it in 2016 by 22,934; DMK's Kannan flipped it in 2021 by just 5,452; and PMK has now reclaimed it by 18,490 in alliance with AIADMK.
Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Brihadeeswara
Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the UNESCO-listed 11th-century Brihadeeswara temple built by Rajendra Chola I, is the obvious headline stop and sits inside the constituency. Pair it with the Tribhuvanam temple downstream and the Airavatesvara temple at Darasuram for a full Great Living Chola Temples trail.
