Is there a TVK alliance? Who backs the TVK government?
Short answerTVK fought the April 2026 election alone, so it has no pre-poll alliance. It governs with the support of Congress, VCK, CPI, CPI(M) and IUML, which helped it win the 13 May 2026 confidence vote 144 to 22. Congress (2 ministers), VCK (1) and IUML (1) are in the 35-member cabinet; CPI and CPI(M) have none.

The 13 May 2026 confidence vote
A government needs the House's confidence, not a named alliance. Three days after taking office, the TVK government won its vote 144 to 22 with 5 neutral:
| Result | Who |
|---|---|
| For the government: 144 | TVK 106, Congress 5, VCK 2, CPI 2, CPI(M) 2, IUML 2, 24 AIADMK MLAs of a rebel faction, 1 AMMK MLA (expelled by his party). Reports give TVK as 108, its April winners; Vijay had given up one of his two seats on 10 May and the Speaker does not vote, which leaves 106 and makes the parts add up to 144 |
| Against: 22 | 22 AIADMK MLAs loyal to Edappadi K. Palaniswami |
| Neutral: 5 | Reports name BJP's one MLA and the PMK's MLAs among them. The DMK walked out and did not vote |
Who is in the cabinet
The Government's minister list, last checked 26 September 2026, has 35 ministers including the Chief Minister, the most the Constitution allows for Tamil Nadu (Article 164(1A)). On 8 May 2026 CPI and CPI(M) said they would support the government from outside, without ministers; none of their members is on the list.
| Party | Ministers | In the cabinet |
|---|---|---|
| TVK | 31 | since 10 May 2026 |
| INC | 2 | since 21 May 2026 |
| VCK | 1 | since 22 May 2026 |
| IUML | 1 | since 22 May 2026 |
The numbers moved after 13 May
The AIADMK's two factions reconciled on 27 May 2026. Between 25 May 2026 and 29 June 2026 six AIADMK MLAs resigned and joined TVK, and Vijay gave up one of his two seats, so seven seats fell vacant. See how a by-election works.
Reports call the group the “TVK-led bloc”. We found no formally announced alliance name (checked 2 October 2026). The pre-poll alliances are on Tamil Nadu alliances 2026.
