Tamil Nadu alliances 2026: who was with whom?

Short answer

Two alliances fought the April 2026 election: the DMK-led alliance (Congress, DMDK, VCK, CPI, CPI(M), MDMK, IUML and others) and the AIADMK-led NDA (AIADMK, BJP, PMK, AMMK). TVK and NTK fought alone. After the result, Congress, VCK, CPI, CPI(M) and IUML backed the TVK government.

Checked 2 October 2026. Alliance members against the March 2026 reports named below; seats against ECI's results; positions after the result against the 13 May 2026 vote and the 21-22 May cabinet lists.

The DMK-led alliance

Before the vote it brought together the DMK, Congress, DMDK, VCK, CPI, CPI(M), MDMK, IUML and smaller parties. MDMK, KMDK and MMK were also allotted seats; ECI counts candidates who stood on the DMK's symbol under the DMK.

PartySeats contestedSeats wonAfter the result
DMK17659Main opposition party; Udhayanidhi Stalin is Leader of the Opposition since 10 May 2026
INC285Left the DMK alliance and backed TVK on 6 May; two ministers since 21 May
DMDK101Stayed with the DMK
VCK82Backed TVK from 8 May, saying it remains in the DMK's alliance for future polls; one minister since 22 May
CPI52Backed TVK from 8 May; no minister
CPM52Backed TVK from 8 May; no minister
IUML22Voted for the TVK government on 13 May; one minister since 22 May

The AIADMK-led NDA

AIADMK, BJP, the PMK of Dr Anbumani Ramadoss and the AMMK of T. T. V. Dhinakaran agreed their seat-sharing on 24 March 2026.

PartySeats contestedSeats wonAfter the result
AIADMK1724722 MLAs voted against the government on 13 May; 24 MLAs of a rebel faction voted for it
BJP331Its one MLA was reported neutral in the 13 May vote
PMK184Its four MLAs were reported neutral in the 13 May vote
AMMK111Its one MLA, expelled by the party on 12 May, voted for the government on 13 May

Parties that fought alone

TVK contested 233 seats and won 108; NTK contested all 234 and won none. Neither was in an alliance. See who backs the TVK government and NTK.

“Seats contested” and “won” are ECI's figures (4 May 2026); they count an ally that stood on a bigger party's symbol under that party. The “after the result” column follows the confidence vote of 13 May 2026 and the cabinet lists of 21 and 22 May; the alliances themselves were not formally dissolved in anything we found, so read it as where each party stood on those dates.
