Each row is one unbroken term, as the Assembly's table lists them. Karunanidhi, M. G. Ramachandran, Jayalalithaa and O. Panneerselvam held office more than once. From 1967 to 2026 every Chief Minister came from the DMK or the AIADMK.

Before 1967: Madras Presidency and Madras State

The Assembly's list starts in 1920, under the Madras Presidency. The state was called Madras State from 1950 and was renamed Tamil Nadu in 1969.
