S. S. Sivasankar retained Kunnam (AC 148) in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election as the DMK candidate, polling 87,237 votes and winning by a margin of 15,557 over AIADMK's A. Saranya. This is his third Assembly term from Kunnam (2011, 2021, 2026), with one earlier term from Andimadam (2006-11). He served as Tamil Nadu's Minister for Transport from 29 March 2022 to 5 May 2026, having earlier been the state's Minister for the Welfare of Backward, Most Backward and Denotified Communities (May 2021 – March 2022). He has been the DMK's Ariyalur District Secretary since 2001, and is a published author of three books — including the historical novel Thozhar Chozhan.

Family

Father S. Sivasubramanian was a long-time DMK supporter who helped build the party in the district; mother is Sivarajeshwari. Wife Dr. Gayathridevi, a physician from Papanasam, Thanjavur district. Two sons — Sivasaran and Sivasurya. Brother S. S. Sivakumar. The family is based in Rajaji Nagar, Ariyalur.
