What are local body elections in Tamil Nadu, and who runs them?

Short answer

Local body elections choose the ward members, councillors and presidents of Tamil Nadu's village, town and city councils, and the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission, not the Election Commission of India, runs them. For when the vote will be held, see the local body election date page: no date had been announced when we checked on 11 October 2026.

Checked 11 October 2026. The State Election Commission's home page, FAQ and introduction; a July 2026 press report on the rural special officers; the Constitution's Articles 172, 173, 243E, 243K, 243U and 243ZA.

Key line: one commission, one ward, one member: the State Election Commission runs the polls, and you vote for the member of your own ward.

What the elections are

A ward is the smallest voting area of a local body, and each ward elects one member. The bodies fall into two groups.

Urban: corporations, municipalities, town panchayats
  • Voters elect one councillor for each ward. At the last polls (19 February 2022, counted 22 February 2022) the Commission announced 12,838 wards.
  • The councillors took the oath on 2 March 2022 and chose the mayors, chairpersons and presidents from among themselves on 4 March 2022: an indirect election.
  • The figures are those of 2022; wards and bodies can change after delimitation or when a town is upgraded.
Rural: village panchayat, panchayat union, district panchayat
  • A rural voter casts four votes: for a village panchayat ward member, the village panchayat president, a panchayat union ward member and a district panchayat ward member.
  • Village panchayat posts are contested on a non-party basis; panchayat union and district panchayat wards are contested on a party basis.
  • Seats are reserved for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and women.

Where things stand

  • No schedule. The State Election Commission's home page listed none when we checked on 11 October 2026. The date, and the timing the press reports, are kept on the local body election date page.
  • Urban terms. The councillors first met on 2 March 2022 (oath) and a municipality's term is five years from its first meeting, with the election to be completed before it ends (Article 243U). By our reading of that article the current urban terms run to early March 2027. This is our reading, not an official date.
  • Rural bodies. Special officers run the 9,624 village panchayats, 314 panchayat unions and 28 district panchayats of 28 districts; their tenure, which expired on 5 July 2026, was extended by six months (DT Next, 7 July 2026). Nine districts (Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi) are outside that order because their bodies were elected separately.

How to find your ward and polling station

  1. Be on the roll. The local body roll is prepared from the Assembly roll (State Election Commission FAQ), so check your name on the Assembly roll first: our voter help guide or the Chief Electoral Officer's site, elections.tn.gov.in.
  2. Ask your local body. The Electoral Registration Officer of the local body prepares its roll, ward by ward. Your corporation, municipality, town panchayat or panchayat union office can tell you your ward number once the roll for that election is out.
  3. Find your seat and district. Our pages cover Assembly seats, not wards: use the search for your village or town, or browse the districts.
  4. Polling station. We found no ward or polling-station search on the State Election Commission's home page (checked 11 October 2026). Our polling station guide is for Assembly polls; look again when a schedule is announced, because the roll published for that election is the one that counts.

Common questions

What is a local body election in Tamil Nadu?

It is the election of the members of the councils closest to people: village panchayats, panchayat unions and district panchayats in rural areas, and town panchayats, municipalities and municipal corporations in towns and cities. Each ward elects one member.

Who conducts local body elections in Tamil Nadu?

The Tamil Nadu State Election Commission, under Articles 243K and 243ZA of the Constitution. The Election Commission of India conducts Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

How is a local body election different from an Assembly election?

A different commission runs it, voters choose a ward member rather than an MLA, and village panchayat posts are contested without party symbols. The local body roll is built from the Assembly constituency roll.

How do I find my ward?

Ask your corporation, municipality, town panchayat or panchayat union office: its Electoral Registration Officer prepares the ward-wise roll. Check first that your name is on the Assembly roll.
