About Attur
Attur is a taluk town in eastern Salem district, set in a valley between the Kalvarayan and Chitteri hills, and it is the trading hub for the surrounding rice and sago belt. The constituency is SC-reserved and runs across Attur and Pethanaickenpalayam blocks. Around 2.05 lakh voters polled in 2026. The seat has stayed AIADMK in three straight cycles, with comfortable margins each time, and was held by Congress's M. R. Sundaram in 2006. Long-running issues here include the Attur-Tiruchi rail line demand, hill-fringe road links and minor irrigation tank desilting.
Plan an Attur trip
Drive up to Kalvarayan hills from Attur for the Periyar Falls and tribal villages, or head north to Yercaud via the Chitteri foothills. The Attur fort ruins and the sago factories on the Salem road give a quick local-flavour stop.
